Words and Wool

The biggest wool project of this past week was getting ready to begin my six-week craft class with the Jr. High and High School girls at our homeschool group.

I gathered scraps, yarn, pincushions, samples, instructions, etc. Quite a lot of things to bring along, but the whole lot of it made me quite happy! Look at all the color and possibility!

Our first project was fingerless gloves out of felted sweaters and the girls jumped in happily! We will finish them up this week and I will take some pictures. I have a tiny little valentine project we can make if we have enough time after the gloves.

I continue to work on my crochet afghan and another embroidery project that is secret for the time being but almost finished!

As for reading......

Behind the Scenes at Downton Abbey by Emma Rowley. At the end of last week, after my latest order of flowers was delivered and school was over, I had about an hour and a half to myself and sat down with a pot of tea to read this book. Delightful! I found myself wishing I was a costume designer, then an historic food creator, etc.

Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace, and Learning the Hard Way by Shauna Neiquist is the book she wrote before Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes. Her writing is always easy to read and applicable because it is about real life. Her main point through the essays is that life is both bitter and sweet, and usually both at the same time. She suffers from several miscarriages while writing this book making it of particular interest to those also grieving such a loss.

Next week I'll be hosting a one-off Book Club discussing Bread and Wine (Shauna's most recent book). So, I'm delving back into that book for a second time to make some notes and figure out just what recipes we'll be wanting to eat while we discuss the book.

Reading in the Wild: The Book Whisperer's Keys to Cultivating Lifelong Reading Habits by Donalyn Miller is a book I just picked off the shelf at the library. It's written by reading teachers for people who want to encourage/teach children to be life-long lovers of reading. I'm guessing I will pick up some ideas on encouraging my own children to foster this life-long habit.
