Top 10 Books from 2013

Here are my top ten recommended books from 2013. I find it interesting that there is only one novel in my top ten.....Maybe this year I'll find a few amazing works of fiction to read.

Echoes of Eden: Reflections on Christianity, Literature, and the Arts by Jerram Barrs. As a Christian, someone who loves to be creative, and someone who loves to read, I found this book an amazing combination of all of those loves!

Fit to Burst : Abundance, Mayhem, and the Joys of Motherhood by Rachel Jankovic An excellent, encouraging and thoughtful book on motherhood and our Christian faith and how the two intersect.

Surprised by Oxford: A Memoir by Carolyn Weber had me turning pages faster than I have in a long time with her well-told story of coming to faith from an agnostic background, in the setting of Oxford University.

In the Midst of Life by Jennifer Worth is the author of Call the Midwife's treatise on care for the elderly and dying. This book was, as always, very well written and was an excellent starting point for thinking about how to approach the subject of dying and how to best care for those in this stage of life. Highly recommend this.

The Forgotten Garden: A Novel by Kate Morton. I've never read a Kate Morton book I haven't loved. She is the queen of the novel for me. I hope she has a new one coming out soon!

Uprooted: A Guide for Homesick Christians by Rebecca VanDoodewaard. This little book is excellent for anyone moving, having moved, or knowing someone who is/will be moving (in short, everyone). This book made me face the realities in my own life of the moves I have made and helped me to understand myself a bit better.

Glimpses of Grace: Treasuring the Gospel in Your Home by Gloria Furman. As you know, I love the subject of grace (in its many definitions) and talking about how grace can be lived out and seen in our homes made for an excellent book.

Spiritual Parenting: An Awakening for Today's Families by Michelle Anthony. Excellent book on parenting with many practical ideas. I took lots of notes.

Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes by Sheila Neiquist. The subjects of this book are so close to my heart that I couldn't help but love this book -- food, fellowship, Christ, and recipes with each chapter!!!!

10 Gifts of Wisdom: What Every Child Must Know Before They Leave Home by Sally Clarkson. Anything Sally writes is guaranteed to make it on my top list. This was a very practical book of things to make sure you train your children in before they leave home.

I see a few I have read and a couple on my Wish List already. I gave Stephanie my copy of Bread & Wine as I knew she would like it as much as me.

And what can I say about Surprised by Oxford. I LOVED that book. Her latest is also very good. It continues the story, especially about combining the demands of having stair step children while keeping up as a writer.

I think I told you I adopted her as one of my other spiritual/blog daughters so she is family. :)

You always have a great selection! I'm never disappointed when reading anything you suggest!
I read the bread &wine book. It made me think of all the wonderful people that have warmly invited our family into their homes.
Going to have to order a few of the other ones! Thanks! xx

Your shawl looks great! And the stripes worked out perfectly. What size / type needle does Rachel need? If I have a double in my stash, I'd be happy to mail it to you.

Stephanie! That is so kind of you to offer needles. We snapped a size 5 of my interchangeable needles :( We decided that going up a size to size 6 would be fine since the nature of the shawl is change every few rows anyway! So, I think we are good. Once the roads are clear and the calendar as well, I'll go and pick up a replacement for the 5.
