Review of "Thankful" by Eileen Spinelli, Illustrated by Archie Preston

Thankful

This is an endearing picture book for children around the theme of being thankful. The front cover says “fall” all over it with a picture of children playing in falling leaves next to a large leaf pile.

Inside, the book goes along in rhyming verse with things that people are thankful for: the fireman for putting the fire out, the poet for words that rhyme, the chef for plates licked clean, and, my favorite of all, the queen is thankful for afternoon tea!!

This is certainly a book I will enjoy reading with my five year old daughter, as well as with any children that might visit our home during the season. It is short enough to keep the attention of younger children but there are enough pages with engaging illustrations to make a child’s imagination smile and perhaps bring out further conversation. The only thing that could improve a little in this book would be the quality of the illustrations but that is only because I have a very high standard.

This is a Christian book and that is made evident not just through the theme of thankfulness but also in mentioning that pastors are thankful for God’s loving word.

All in all, I think this is an excellent choice for fall reading with any kindergartener or preschooler.

This books sounds like a good one for my grandchildren. I think it will cheer any mother who reads it aloud, too.
