Words and Wool

Yesterday we made a spur of the moment trip to Conner Prairie since it was a free day! We spent a lot of time in the barn with the tame sheep. They were adorable! They are "Tuni's" and this lady just stood by us and enjoyed being petted. And it was relaxing to do so!

Of course we had to stop in the Weaver's Shed to see what yarn was being dyed. There was a pot of goldenrod on the fire and another of acorns waiting.

Tomorrow is the first day of our Homeschool Group and I will be leading two different Knit Clubs each Thursday morning. It should be a lot of fun! I'll have all the girls from last year plus seven new members! Thanks to a "pin" from a friend I whipped up this mug cozy as a suggestion of something for the club members to make. I am working hard on a fingerless mitt as well, which I hope to have finished before tomorrow!

Every other Wednesday a few friends come over and we have cooking, baking, and needle arts classes. Today we all worked on mug cozies. :) It was the first time for several to learn the purl stitch.

Jamesie was convinced to pull out some needles and try a mug cozy too. :)

As for books,

I don't think I finished any book this week but am nearing the end of several, especially with the children. I am making weekly trips to the library now with school in session. I love picking up my holds. It is just so exciting to have new books to read.

Arthur Ransome (Twayne's English Authors Series) by Peter Hunt is a biography of the man who wrote the beloved series we are so attached to right now -- the Swallows and Amazons series. We are almost finished with Winter Holiday and can't wait to begin Coot Club. I am interested to find out more of the life behind the stories.

I love this quote about Ransome's mother: "She would never read aloud to us a book that she did not enjoy reading herself....Any book worth reading by children is also worth reading by grown-up persons."

The Memoirs of Mary Queen of Scots: A Novel by Carolly Erickson is a fast-reading book I just began. I've never read Erickson before but a trusted friend tells me she is a well-respected author. I will see how this book turns out but am already hoping to read others of Erickson's books.

Stopping by from Ginny's. A knitting club sounds like a great idea for a homeschooling co-op!

I would love to know where you got the pattern for the mug cozy. I especially like the "tea" embroidery.

That biography on Arthur Ransome looks good - I'll be interested to hear what you think of it. Have you read, We Didn't Mean To Go To Sea, yet? That's my favourite one of his.

Lovely to catch up with you Heather - it sounds like you are busy but into a happy routine ... just the way I love to be! I love that you are teaching knitting for co-op - that would be such a fun class! We aren't doing a co-op again this year, but have a mom's support group with monthly field trips which is super fun.
